AI Speaking practice (beta)

How an AI Speaking role-play works: choose a card, prepare, talk to the AI patient, and read your report on the nine OET Speaking criteria.

In short

  • You play the clinician and an AI patient answers in a voice. Prepare for up to 3 minutes, then talk for up to 5.
  • The report marks the nine OET Speaking criteria. It is a practice estimate, not an OET score.
  • Recordings are deleted after 90 days. Transcripts and reports stay in your account.

Steps

  1. 1

Open My courses, go to Speaking practice and press "Start a role-play".

  2. 2

Tick "I agree to the recording terms", then choose a card and press "Open this card".

  3. 3

Read your card and prepare for up to 3 minutes. Test your sound and microphone, then press "Start the consultation".

  4. 4

You speak first. Tap Speak, talk, then tap Send. The patient replies out loud and in writing. A role-play lasts up to 5 minutes.

  5. 5

Press "Finish and mark". In about a minute you get your report.

How it works

You are the clinician. The AI patient has a card you cannot see, with worries they share only if you ask. A quiet room helps, and headphones stop the patient's voice being picked up as yours. If your browser asks to use the microphone, allow it. A single spoken turn can last up to 90 seconds.

Your report

The report marks the nine OET Speaking criteria. The five clinical communication criteria are each marked 0 to 3 and the four language criteria are each marked 0 to 6, with quotes from what you said, better phrases to use next time, and moments that mattered. It also counts your speaking time, words and fillers. The report is a practice estimate from our AI, not an OET score or grade. If you speak fewer than two turns, there is not enough to mark and you can try the card again.

How many role-plays you have

The page shows how many role-plays you have left. The OET Speaking Course includes 5 role-plays, and the AI Speaking pack adds 10 more. A role-play counts once it is started. One that you started and never spoke in is given back the next time you start one. See OET AI Speaking practice.

Recordings and privacy

Your spoken turns are recorded and written out by an AI service so the patient can answer and your report can be marked. Our teachers may listen to recordings to check the marking. Recordings are deleted after 90 days. The written transcript and your report stay in your account. Press "Delete my recordings" to delete them sooner. See the privacy policy.

This feature is in beta. Your results also appear on your progress page.
