Reading and Listening mock tests

How to start a timed Reading or Listening mock test, how the clock and saving work, and how to read your marks and explanations.

In short

  • Each mock test is timed in the OET format, and you get marks and an explanation for every question.
  • Answers are saved as you go. If the page closes, open the same link and carry on: the clock keeps running.
  • Free taster tests are on the public Reading and Listening mock pages.

Steps

  1. 1

Open My courses, go to Mock tests and press "Open the tests".

  2. 2

Choose a test, read the introduction and press the start button, for example "Start" followed by the first part's name.

  3. 3

Answer the questions. Your answers are saved as you go. In Reading, press "Finish" and then start the next part when you are ready; you cannot go back to a finished part.

  4. 4

Press "Hand in the test" to see your result.

  5. 5

Read your marks by part and by question type, then the answers and explanations. Press "Show only the ones I missed" to see just your mistakes.

Before you start

The introduction page shows how many questions the test has, the minutes for each part, and the format of the OET Reading or Listening sub-test it follows. Sit it in one go, somewhere quiet.

  • Reading: each part has its own clock. When you finish a part you cannot go back to it.
  • Listening: use headphones. Play each recording once, as in the test, and read the questions before you press play.
  • Typed answers must be spelled correctly, as in the test.

The clock and saving

Your answers are saved as you go. If the page closes, open the same link to carry on: the clock keeps running. When the last clock runs out, the test is handed in for you.

Your result

You get your mark out of the test total, your marks for each part and for each question type, and an explanation for every question. The result page notes that OET says candidates awarded Grade B typically achieve at least 30 marks out of 42 in Reading or Listening, and compares your mark with it. Your sittings are saved, and the list shows your best mark. Marks also appear on your progress page.

Free tasters

You can try a free test without a purchase on the Reading mock tests and Listening mock tests pages.

Questions about this

Can I pause a mock test?+

No. The clock keeps running if you close the page. Your answers are saved, so you can open the same link and carry on, but the time still counts.

Do I get an explanation for each question?+

Yes. After you hand in the test you see your marks by part and question type, then the answer and an explanation for every question. You can show only the ones you missed.

Do you convert my marks to a grade?+

Your progress page shows marks only, because OET publishes no conversion for Reading and Listening. The result page compares your mark with the 30 out of 42 that OET says Grade B candidates typically reach.

Where are the free tests?+

On the Reading mock tests and Listening mock tests pages of the site. They are tasters, separate from the full mock tests you buy.
